Caracteristics:
In this box you will find everything you need to
put together your own “Shrine to Saint Anthony”. Included are: the altar steps,
the clay figure of the saint, decorative stickers, small leaf basil seeds, a
paper carnation, a picture of the saint, a little box of oil lamp wicks (to be
used preferably with liquid wax, or otherwise with cooking or olive oil) and an
instruction leaflet both in English and Portuguese. These popular shrines are a
colourful, affectionate tribute, that appeals to both believers and
non-believers.
Known as “thrones” in Lisbon, such small
traditional shrines can be found in houses, on windowsills or in the street
during the month of June. A statuette of the saint sits at the top of the steps
and, at the bottom, a donation plate is placed requesting “a penny for Saint
Anthony”. This tradition started in 1755, after the great Lisbon earthquake
left Saint Anthony’s church in ruins and funds were sought to rebuild it. Even
after this purpose was achieved, the tradition continued, now benefiting the
children who lend a hand.
